18 Interesting People to Follow in 2018

social media posting for accountants

I’ll keep it short this week, as most of you are returning to work after the Christmas holidays. (And rightly so – we fully support the #restpillar.)

So this is a small and simple marketing tip: not too much to overwhelm, but enough to keep you motivated no matter when you’re reading this.

Here are eighteen people, companies, or accounts to connect with so you can be better at marketing in 2018.

The only reason there are 18 of them is because I made a list of the people or accounts who came first to mind.

There’s a marketing lesson in that: being remembered is a result of being relentless in your content marketing. You’re on Facebook, you’re on Instagram or Twitter or whatever platform. You share videos and personal posts and business blog posts and ideas. You talk to people. Your firm is present on a continual basis – on social and in the news.

This marketing relentlessness keeps you top of mind – so when your prospects have need of the services you supply, they won’t forget. You will be the first one they think of.

Oh – and none of the links below are referral links or give me money or rewards of any kind, other than the feel-good ones of getting to help people. They’re simply good people and good companies.

Enjoy the connections!

Chris Marr

Chris Marr

Content marketer extraordinaire. Delivering a killer content marketing conference in Edinburgh later this year. I highly recommend it.

Jason Blumer

Jason Blumer

An accountant who helps other accountants – particularly the creative, interesting, non-boring ones. Runs an event called Deeper Weekend every year, and it’s well worth going to.

Peter Shankman

Angel investor, ADD-fuelled business owner, all round generous and hilarious human being. His book Zombie Loyalists is a great read.

Mark Schaefer

Has great things to say about branding and building your own network. Wrote a book called Known and speaks regularly all over the world, in a down to earth human way. I still love the fact that when I introduced myself at a conference, he recognised me instantly from our Twitter exchanges.

Andrew & Pete

Hilarious duo who make marketing not only understandable, but good fun. Hung out with them post Xerocon this year and they are exactly who their YouTube channel says they are. These guys are how marketing is done without being…markety.

Cara Mackay

Cara Mackay

Follow with enthusiasm if you want an example of a real human being business owner who is good fun. Follow with care if you hold to an old school understanding of the word “professional” (such as a feeling of horror at finding swear words in LinkedIn posts). She posts in one of the most real ways I’ve ever seen – you get exactly the same person in real life and online, rants and all. She owns a shed company and delivers the very best kind of content marketing – helpful videos based on what her clients actually care about.

Gavin Bell

Gavin Bell

He’s “The Facebook Ads Guy”. Started a weekly vlog and it’s hilarious stuff – always good value. Also good banter to hang about with and an example of the great results from working in a focused, niche area.

Gary Turner

Gary Turner

MD of Xero UK. Shares relevant tech and digital stuff whilst also being an interesting human at the same time. Doesn’t pull any punches when people are being stupid.

Blake OliverBlake Oliver

Self described “entrepreneurial accountant”, which is my favourite kind. Shares really good stuff for accountants, particularly focused on tech and software and scalability. Pleasantly enough his sharing includes PF content, from time to time.

Carl ReaderCarl Reader

Author and speaker and co-founder of multiple businesses including a medium sized accountancy firm and a fin tech startup called TaxGo. I find myself engaging with a lot of his LinkedIn posts because they’re readable and relevant.

Brigette Hyacinth

Brigette Hyacinth

Writes some of the most interesting and relevant LinkedIn posts I read. Always helping people to see things from a different view (particularly when it comes to employment and employees). I love the encouragement to be a better employer, one who treats employees like human beings and takes responsibility for how the team works together (or doesn’t).

Col Gray

Col Gray

Living legend when it comes to brand. Truly humble human being as well. Happens to be the Head Brand Designer at PF, and this is why. He fits with our culture and our team, delivers seriously amazing brand work, and we have combined his 20 years’ brand experience with our similar level of accountant experience. His YouTube videos are always relevant and helpful.

Design Pickle

Design Pickle

Unlimited small graphic design tasks for a monthly fee. This is the kind of business you wonder how they can actually make any money, because they’re so awesome. We use them at PF and some of our clients do too. If you want a special PF discount link we do have one – let me know.

So Very BritishSo Very British

Hilariously accurate posts about life in the British Isles. As a dual British-American citizen these are particularly hilarious and I share them often.

Mike Rohde

For those who like my sketchnotes, I got the idea from this guy. Brilliant creative artist and a great book, The Sketchnote Handbook.

Horrible Logos

Horrible Logos

Hilariously bad logos for a fiver. An example of creative thinking and humour and a business mind all in one. Enjoy. Get yourself a horrible jingle while you’re at it.

The Cake Nest

The Cake Nest

Delivers slices of cake to people for a few quid. (Or to yourself, if you like.) It’s a brain wave. My only question is, why does it not exist outside of the UK yet??

Hello Fresh

Hello Fresh

If you follow me on Instagram you’ll see loads of amazing meal photos. I take very little credit – HF are incredible and it’s such a brilliant business idea. I do have a special referral link (and sometimes completely free food boxes to give away) so message me on your preferred communication platform to get the link.
